Americans turning sharply toward isolationism, poll finds

WASHINGTON -- At the very moment when President Barack Obama is eBron James Shoes looking to thrust the U.S. ever more into global affairs, from Afghanistan to climate change, the American public is turning more isolationist and unilateralist than it has at any time in decades, according to a new poll released Thursday.

The survey by the Pew Research Center found a plurality of Americans - 49 percent - think that the U.S. should "mind its own business internationally" and leave it to other countries to fend for themselves.

It was the first time in more than 40 years of polling that the ranks of Americans with isolationist sentiment outnumbered those with a more international outlook, Pew said LeBron James Shoes.

"The U.S. public is turning decidedly inward," Pew said.

The U.S. is also growing more unilateralist, with 44 percent saying that the U.S. "should go our own way in international matters, not worrying about whether other countries agree with us or not."

That was the highest percentage since the question was first asked in 1964.

The country also has grown pessimistic about U.S. clout in world affairs eBron James Shoes.

By a margin of 41 percent to 25 percent, Americans think the U.S. is playing a less important role in the world than 10 years ago. It was the first time since the 1970s - when the U.S. had withdrawn from Vietnam, been hurt by an Arab oil embargo and seen its citizens held hostage in Iran - that a plurality of Americans thought their country was weaker than it had been a decade before.

The shift in sentiment comes after more than eight years of war in Afghanistan and almost seven in Iraq, and in the midst of the worst economy since the Great Depression.

Just 32 percent of the public favors increasing U.S. troops in Afghanistan, and only 46 percent say it's likely that Afghanistan will be able to withstand the threat posed by the Taliban. The survey of 2,000 U.S. adults was taken from Oct. 28-Nov. 8 - before Obama's speech on Afghanistan Tuesday night. It has an error margin of plus or minus 3 percentage points eBron James Shoes.

The public turn toward isolationism comes as Obama plans to escalate the U.S. role in Afghanistan with more troops and as he engages with other countries and international institutions on issues ranging from climate change to the economy.

Next week, he will visit Denmark to attend an international conference on climate change, then Norway to accept the Nobel Peace Prize.

On other points, the Pew poll found:

-A plurality of Americans, 44 percent, now say that China is the world's top economic power, while just 27 percent say it's the U.S. That's a sharp reversal from nearly two years ago, when 41 percent thought the U.S. was the No. 1 economic power, and 30 percent thought it was China.

-A majority of Americans, 53 percent, see China's growing power as a "major threat." That's virtually unchanged from what the quadrennial poll found in 2001 and 2005.

However, 642 members of the Council on Foreign Relations, who are seen as opinion leaders and also were polled by Pew, had the opposite view. Just 21 percent of them saw China as a major threat, down from 38 percent in 2001 and 30 percent in 2005.

For them, Pew said, "China has been transformed from a major threat to the United States to an increasingly important future ally eBron James Shoes."

UPDATE 2-Wall St tax has "great deal of merit" - Pelosi

WASHINGTON, Dec 3 (Reuters) -uggs outlet A proposed tax on financial transactions "has a great deal of merit" and would help raise much-needed revenue for the U.S. government, House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi said on Thursday as other backers touted it as a measure to slash Wall Street salaries.

"It is really uggs outlet a source of revenue that has really minimal impact on the transaction but a tremendous impact on helping us meet our needs," Pelosi said at a news conference.

Her comments suggested the proposal may find its way into a House bill aimed at bringing down the double-digit U.S. unemployment rate before the November 2010 congressional elections.

But analysts said it still faces long odds due to uggs outlet opposition from prominent lawmakers and the Obama administration.

Other backers tapped into widespread anger at banks like Goldman Sachs Group (GS.N) that are posting healthy profits after benefiting from a $700 billion federal bailout.

"Maybe next year they won't be able to afford $17 billion or $20 billion in bonuses because they'll have to pay a modest tax on their high-volume trading," said Democratic Representative Peter DeFazio. "Maybe the average salary will drop to four or five hundred thousand (dollars). Heavens."

DeFazio's measure would apply to trades made by uggs outlet U.S. businesses or residents, no matter where they take place.

It would tax futures contracts, swaps and credit default swaps at a rate of 0.02 percent and stock transactions at 0.25 percent. Options would be taxed at the rate of the underlying asset.

The tax would be refunded for mutual funds and savings accounts for retirement, education and healthcare. It would not apply to the first $100,000 of activity.

The G20 group of industrialized countries asked the International Monetary Fund last month to consider a "Tobin tax" or other methods to fund bank bailouts. The concept is named for economist James Tobin, who proposed a similar measure in the 1970s to dampen foreign exchange trading.

But the envisioned $150 billion per year that would be raised by DeFazio's proposal would not go to Wall Street.

The money would be used to reduce the federal deficit and fund new construction projects and other measures aimed at bringing down the unemployment rate -- now at 10.2 percent -- as the United States struggles to emerge from recession uggs outlet.

Surprise! Few Surprises in Grammy Nominations

With sales of recorded music in a decade-long slide and the industry’s Nike basketball shoes promotional infrastructure of retail stores and magazines disappearing, the Recording Academy and its voting pool of 12,000 music professionals stuck largely to the biggest-selling and most familiar pop faces in the nominations for the 52nd annual Grammy Awards.

During a live broadcast on CBS on Wednesday night, Beyoncé topped the list with 10 nominations, followed by Taylor Swift with eight and the Black Eyed Peas, Kanye West and Maxwell with six apiece. The three most prestigious categories — album, record (for a single song) and song of the year (for songwriters) — are dominated by only a handful of repeat nominees, and pit three of the most popular — and most critically admired — young women in pop music today in a face-off: Beyoncé vs. Ms. Swift vs. Lady Gaga, the recipient of five nominations.

The Dave Matthews Band also got its first nomination for album of the year, for “Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King” (RCA), competing against Beyoncé, Ms. Swift, Lady Gaga and the Black Eyed Peas.

Twitter groaned on Wednesday night over the Nike basketball shoes conservatism of the major categories; “#fail,” the tweet equivalent of a rude thumbs down, appeared dozens of times. But for many in the music industry the list was considered a fair reflection of popular tastes for an awards show that is sometimes known for left-field choices Nike basketball shoes.

“Over the last few years they’ve gotten better at slotting the right songs and the right albums into the right categories,” said Bill Werde, editorial director of Billboard. “Five or 10 years ago it wasn’t always assumed that that would be the case.”

For a second year the nomination ceremony was presented live on television, and it was far from a smash. CBS reported on Thursday that the one-hour show had an audience of 6.48 million. (“Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,” the 1964 animated classic, drew 10.74 million in the previous hour.) The awards will be given out on Jan. 31.

The low ratings point to the Grammys’ longstanding challenge in attracting young fans, who tend to view the awards as out of touch with fresh talent. “I doubt if any kids are going to go out and buy Lady Gaga just because she was nominated for a Grammy.” said Isac Walter, editor of MySpace Music.

The Grammy voters’ affinity for older, established artists does not help its credibility among the MySpace generation: This year the average age for nominees in best solo rock vocal performance is 61 (from Bob Dylan at 68 to Prince at 51) Nike basketball shoes .

With 109 categories the Grammys nominations are a bonanza for hundreds of artists. But there are always some prominent names shut out. One of the more conspicuous this year was Whitney Houston, whose comeback album, “I Look to You” (Arista), was released on the last day of Grammy eligibility, Aug. 31.

“Considering the level of critical acclaim the album received and the sales to date, one million in the U.S. and two million worldwide, we’re surprised,” said Mika El-Baz, a spokeswoman for the label.

One of the least surprising snubs, however, was to Mr. West. Although he got six nominations, none are for the biggest categories, and in one category (rap/ sung collaboration) he is nominated three times.

His omission from the biggies is widely seen as payback for his outburst at the MTV Video Music Awards in September, when he interrupted an acceptance speech by Ms. Swift. Timing worked against Mr. West. MTV’s awards were on Sept Nike basketball shoes. 13, just five days before the Recording Academy began to circulate nomination forms to its members.

Even among detractors, though, there was a modicum of respect for the nominations this year, if not the presentation show. Scott Lapatine, founder and editor of the indie-rock blog Stereogum, wrote that the ceremony was “equal parts Lolz and Zzzz.” Those lolz — as in laugh-out-loud moments — included a nomination of Hall & Oates’s “Sara Smile” for best pop performance by a duo or group. Originally released in 1976, the song qualified in a live version released last year.

“That A Taste of Honey beat out Elvis Costello is hard to comprehend,” Mr. Lapatine said, referring to the pop-funk band (“Boogie Oogie Oogie”) that beat Mr. Costello for best new artist in 1979. “But I think the last decade has seen some legit, albeit self-consciously populist, choices.”

“MGMT certainly deserve it this year,” he continued, referring to the Brooklyn synth-pop band, “but are probably underdogs. How hilarious that they’re also competing for a song award with a live version of Hall & Oates’s ‘Nike basketball shoes Sara Smile.’ ”

Obama says cannot "wait and see" for jobs

* Says U.S. resources limited, cheap ugg ideas must be responsible

* Government seeks private sector aid (Adds more Obama remarks, Republican reaction)

By Alister Bull

WASHINGTON, Dec 3 (Reuters) - President Barack Obama urged corporate America on Thursday to help tackle the nation's highest unemployment in 26 years but also hinted at federal tax credits and aid to states to ease jobless woes.

"There's no question that it is difficult out there right now, but we also heard some exciting ideas and proposals for how we can spur hiring," he told business and labor leaders summoned to a White House job creation brainstorming forum.

Obama hosted the event, which critics dismissed as a publicity stunt, after U.S. unemployment hit a 26-year high of 10.2 percent in October, chipping away at his popularity and potentially shaping his political future.

"Despite the progress we've made, many businesses are cheap ugg still skittish about hiring," he said, acknowledging that although growth had resumed, the labor market was lagging behind.

November's unemployment report is cheap ugg due on Friday and a Reuters poll of analysts expect the rate to show no change.

The numbers will provide a sobering backdrop for Obama as he takes his message to Allentown, Pennsylvania, capping a crucial week for the president who also announced a major escalation in the Afghan war.

Allentown, which Obama said was the kind of place "where the rubber hits the road" in the struggles of a weak economy, is the first stop on a "White House to Main Street" tour the president will make to try to reassure Americans.

He will also deliver a speech about the economy on cheap ugg Tuesday at the Brookings Institution think tank in Washington, as his administration weighs its options to lift employment.

Economic anxiety as the country struggles out of the worst recession in 70 years could hurt his Democratic Party in next November congressional elections, and dim Obama's own prospects for a second term in office.

Recent opinion polls show his approval ratings have slipped to about 50 percent, partly because of the economy.

"This White House 'jobs summit' is just another example of President Obama's PR presidency, where he stages photo-ops and events to distract citizens and the media from his cheap uggadministration's failures," said Michael Steele, chairman of the Republican National Committee.

Empowering people with disabilities vital for achieving development targets: UN chief

UNITED NATIONS, Dec. 3 (Xinhua) --cheap uggs Efforts to achieve global development targets must include improving living standards and quality of life for everyone, including the world's 800 million people with disabilities, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said Thursday, marking the International Day of Persons with Disabilities.

"Persons with disabilities encounter many disadvantages," he said in a message for the Day, noting that they are often among society's poorest and most excluded.

"Yet they routinely show tremendous resilience, and achieve great heights in all spheres of human endeavour," he said.

The theme of this year's Day is "making the Millennium Development Goals (MDGS) disability-inclusive," referring to the set of global targets to halve poverty, hunger and other social ills by 2015.

Ban said that when persons with disabilities take part in cheap uggs and lead development processes, their involvement generates opportunities for all.

"The message for the MDGs is clear: putting persons with disabilities and their communities at the heart of our efforts is a proven way to advance the development agenda," he said, while drawing attention to a summit to be held on the Goals next September.

The secretary-general also called for the implementation and universality of the landmark United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. He characterized the pact, which entered into force last year, as "one of our most important tools to advance this cause."

U.S. singer-songwriter Stevie Wonder was officially designated Thursday as a UN Messenger of Peace to advocate for the Organization's work, cheap uggswith the artist -- blind since birth -- to champion people with disabilities.

"It is beyond my ability to fathom that ten percent of the people of this world (living with disabilities) do not matter to the other 90 percent of the people in the world," he told a news conference at the UN Headquarters in New York. "I'm not able to believe that."

The new Messenger of Peace stressed that "seeing a person who's left without an opportunity ... means that we are all with a disability and that disability is a lack of being able to care."

The award-winning musical artist underscored his commitment to create a more inclusive world, likening the task that lies ahead with writing a song.

"At the end of the day, if I'm challenged to write a song that's a hit, it's going to be number one and this is going to be a hit, too," he said.

For her part, the top UN human rights official underscored that people with disabilities continue to face massive challenges in their efforts to live a meaningful life.

"Disability is not specifically mentioned in any of the eight MDGs, in the 18 targets set out to achieve these goals, nor the 48indicators for monitoring their progress," High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay said in a statement commemorating the Day.

She hailed the Convention, which has been ratified by 75 States with dozens of others having signed on, for filling "a major gap in international human rights law" by addressing, among others, the rights to education and freedom from exploitation.

"If the terms of the Convention are rapidly reflected in national laws and policies, the ability of persons with disabilities to act on their own behalf to lift themselves and their families out of poverty and cheap uggs marginalization can and should be greatly enhanced," Pillay said.

The International Day, according to the UN Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, "provides an opportunity to reflect on the work of the (Convention) to date, while also highlighting the progress that remains to be made."

The group pointed to the right to equal recognition before the law as one of the areas in which further progress must be made.

The UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) Thursday welcomed strides made for persons with disabilities in the region, but cautioned that governments and donors continue to neglect to include the issue of disability when dealing with the MDGs.

"If we are serious about addressing poverty then persons with disabilities must be included on MDGs reporting as they are more likely to be poor than other groups," said Alastair Wilkinson of ESCAP.

Events to commemorate the Day will include a panel discussion and a film festival at the UN Headquarters in New York, as well as a series of activities to sensitize and advocate for the rights of people with disabilities, including a children's painting competition, by the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in Nepal cheap uggs (OHCHR-Nepal).
